Felt Sense, Trauma, and the Dynamics of Change

Overview:

Our understanding of the effects of traumatic experiences has increased exponentially over the past ten years providing us with more effective therapeutic approaches. While models vary, there are common practice elements shared by all effective approaches. One of these is an appreciation for one’s ‘felt sense’, that is, inner awareness. We know that therapeutic change requires a reconnection with self and that helping people connect with their own ‘felt sense’ is an important part of the recovery process.

Healing from trauma also involves regaining personal agency, a belief in, and hope for positive change. Effective therapy and especially effective trauma therapy requires therapists to have two essential capabilities, one, skills to support people in reconnecting with their own inner awareness and, two, a theoretical understanding or map of recovery.

In this workshop we will explore and model how to help individuals connect with their ‘felt sense’ and also consider the key theoretical foundations of trauma work. By the end of the workshop, you will have a more informed appreciation of the therapeutic tasks and actions of trauma therapy.

This workshop is appropriate for trainee counsellors, practising counsellors and psychotherapists, counselling psychologists, and other mental health professionals.
